DEI (B) ACTIVITIES

Our lab has been involved in several activities aimed to increased diversity in science, in all levels.

  1. (B) is for Belonging! EVERYONE in this lab is responsible for its success. Every member, irrespective of their role, is empowered to excel and contribute meaningfully, ensuring that everyone feels appreciated and valuable.

  2. Our lab is funded by the NIH FIRST initiative. The NIH Common Fund’s Faculty Institutional Recruitment for Sustainable Transformation (FIRST) program aims to enhance and maintain cultures of inclusive excellence in the biomedical research community. “Inclusive excellence” refers to cultures that establish and sustain scientific environments that cultivate and benefit from a full range of talent. NIH aims to facilitate institutions in building a self-reinforcing community of scientists, by recruiting a critical mass of early-career faculty with a demonstrated commitment to inclusive excellence.

  3. Dr. Coelho is a mentor for SINAI4US. This program offers faculty mentoring to support underrepresented applicants to graduate programs by reviewing their application materials and conducting mock interviews.

  4. Dr. Coelho is a member of the RAPID program at UCSD. This program foster exchange among early career faculty from groups underrepresented in the biomedical workforce. Dr. Coelho helps to revise NIH grant applications from her colleagues and receives strong mentorship, professional development, and research training.

  5. The postdocs and Dr. Coelho are mentors of Black and Latino High School students from NYC. We are part of the CEYE program and we mentor these students during the whole school year providing scientific guidance on their individual research projects, and essay and poster preparations.

  6. Dr. Coelho and the postdocs give a workshop on “How to write a scientific article” for graduate students in Latin America. Dr. Coelho has been leading this workshop for numerous years, dedicating her expertise to training emerging scientists in crafting high-quality research manuscripts for publication. This biannual course, aimed at universities situated in economically challenged regions of Brazil, is now extended to include the participation of postdoctoral researchers from the Coelho lab, further enriching this rewarding educational endeavor.

  7. The lab helps female principal investigators from low-income countries prepare research papers for submission to a scientific journal. We are currently accepting submissions and will revise three articles in March. See the criteria below.
